Top Tips for Planning Your Caribbean Destination Wedding

There’s something incredibly special about a Caribbean destination wedding. Warm ocean air, colorful landscapes, slow mornings, intentional memories, and a week filled with family and friends who traveled from all over the world just to celebrate with you.

I had the absolute privilege of photographing Colette and Nico’s wedding in Antigua, a beautiful Caribbean island with stunning blue waters, lush mountain views, and so much love. Colette and I went to college together, so getting to be there for one of the biggest days of her life was something I’ll hold onto forever.

Their wedding was a gorgeous, colorful, intentional blend of four cultures — American, French, Antiguan, and Peruvian — and every single detail felt like a celebration of who they are together.

As a documentary wedding photographer, destination weddings hold a special place in my heart, and I’ve learned a lot along the way about what makes them go smoothly. So whether you’re in the early planning stages of a Caribbean wedding or just dreaming about it from your couch, here are my top tips, paired with highlights from Colette and Nico’s celebration in Antigua.

Tip 1: Create a Full Wedding Experience for Your Guests

Destination weddings are so unique because your guests aren’t just attending a wedding. They’re traveling (sometimes across the world) to be with you in this one beautiful place, and that deserves to be honored.

Some of the most memorable moments from a destination wedding week aren’t always from the wedding day itself, but from the boat excursion the day before, the low-key beach day with people you haven’t seen in years, the shared meals and laughter that happen when your favorite people are all in the same place with nowhere else to be.

Colette and Nico did this so well. Their guests traveled from the US, France, and Peru, so they honored them by planning a boat day, a BBQ night, and a rehearsal dinner. Each event gave everyone more time to connect, explore, and settle into the island together.

Caribbean group activity ideas:

  • Snorkeling or sailing excursions
  • Beach days or sunset picnics
  • Food or rum-tasting tours
  • A welcome party at your resort or villa
  • A relaxed rehearsal dinner with local flavors

Tip 2: Hire a Wedding Planner for Your Destination Wedding

If I could give you only one piece of advice for a destination wedding, it would be this: hire a planner.

Destination weddings come with a unique set of logistical challenges distinct from those of a local wedding. You’re coordinating vendors you’ve likely never met in person, communicating across time zones, and trusting people with one of the most important days of your life — all from hundreds (or thousands) of miles away.

A great planner is the person who ties all of that together. They communicate with vendors on your behalf, make sure the day-of timeline runs smoothly, and handle all the little details so that you, your partner, and your family can just be present.

Tip 3: Have a Solid Rain Backup Plan

Caribbean weather is typically nice and warm, yet also unpredictable.

Tropical showers can roll in and out quickly, and you won’t always have much warning. Before your wedding day, make sure you and your venue have a clear, solid rain backup plan in place. Know exactly where you’d move the ceremony, how the transition would work, and who is responsible for making that call.

And while you should absolutely have a backup plan, remember to also embrace whatever happens on your wedding day. The weather on your wedding day isn’t something you can control, but your response to it is. If it rains, lean into it. Dance in it, laugh about it, make a memory out of it. The couples who go with the flow tend to have the best stories to tell.

We were genuinely so lucky with the weather at Colette and Nico’s wedding. The evening closed out with the most stunning sunset over the marina at Shirley Heights Lookout.

Tip 4: Understand the Legal Requirements of Getting Married Abroad

Always do your research on what it actually takes to be legally married in your destination country. Each country has its own requirements — waiting periods, paperwork, residency rules — and it’s worth knowing well in advance what’s required for your specific destination.

A very common approach for destination wedding couples is to have a small civil ceremony at home first, followed by a full wedding celebration with a symbolic ceremony, vows, family, and all the festivities. This way, the destination wedding can be exactly what you want it to be without being constrained by local legal requirements. Your planner (see tip #2!) can help you navigate this too.

Colette + Nico’s Caribbean Destination Wedding in Antigua

Colette and Nico chose to get married in Antigua because Colette’s grandmother is Antiguan, and part of her family lives on the island full-time. Their wedding day morning started at Colette’s grandmother’s home, surrounded by family.

The first look happened in the garden, and it was the sweetest, most genuine moment. Colette and Nico are the kind of couple who make each other laugh constantly, and you could feel all of that joy the second they saw each other.

From there, everyone made their way to Shirley Heights Lookout — a beloved restaurant perched high on the island, overlooking the marina and the Caribbean Sea below. For Colette and Nico, this place already held memories, which is why they chose it for their ceremony and reception.

The ceremony was beautiful, intimate, and full of emotion, with that incredible marina view as the backdrop. The reception was colorful and full of intentional nods to their cultures (American, French, Antiguian, Peruvian). And as the sky turned pastel as the sun set, guests danced on cobblestone, enjoyed local dishes, and celebrated the newlyweds into the night.
