Jessica and Mitch’s day at The Hartwood wedding venue in Selma, NC, was joyful, intentional, and full of so much love, cloudy skies, and all. I had the best time documenting every single moment of it.
The Hartwood has this open, light-filled atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else this close to downtown Raleigh. The open-air chapel, the lush landscaping, the timeless reception hall. It’s a true hidden gem just 35 minutes south of the city. If you’re researching wedding venues near Raleigh for up to 250 guests, I think you’ll love this one!

One of my favorite things about The Hartwood is how thoughtfully the getting-ready experience is set up. There are two separate spaces, both equally beautiful, so the morning never feels rushed or cramped. The property also has a log cabin on-site, which is usually where the groom and his party get ready, but it can double as housing for the wedding party or guests for the whole weekend. Jess and Mitch (plus some of their wedding party) actually stayed on-property for their rehearsal dinner and wedding day, which meant way less back-and-forth and way more time just being together. If you’re planning a wedding, minimizing the back-and-forth logistics is always a nice bonus!

The ceremony space at The Hartwood is an open-air chapel, and it’s one of my favorite features of this venue. It gives you that outdoor-ceremony feel, lush greenery, natural light, that airy openness, while still offering overhead cover if the weather doesn’t cooperate. That came in handy for Jess and Mitch’s day! The forecast kept flip-flopping all week leading up to it, but because the ceremony was covered, the rain never became a real concern. The cloudy skies gave us soft, even light all day, so we could use every corner of that property without fighting harsh shadows or squinting into the sun.

The reception space in the Hartwood wedding venue is gorgeous and timeless. It’s a good mix of blank canvas and naturally beautiful surrounding landscaping, so it photographs well whether your design vision is minimal or layered with detail. Jess and Mitch’s reception leaned into fun, and a little glamorous, with disco balls, great lighting, and a packed dance floor, and it photographed beautifully well into the night.
The team at The Hartwood is also wonderful to work with, which makes a real difference during the planning season and on the day itself.

Jess and Mitch were just so wonderful to spend the day with. Their whole vision was to stay present, celebrate with their loved ones, and let the natural, candid moments unfold without overthinking it. That is exactly my kind of wedding to document.
Jessica shared a first look with her bridesmaids and friends of honor. Followed by Jessica’s first look with her dad, out on the patio, and it was the moment the whole day really hit her. You could see it cross her face in real time: oh my gosh, this is actually happening.
There were sweet surprises woven throughout the morning, too.

The ceremony in that open-air chapel was heartfelt and full of genuine emotion, surrounded by family and friends who clearly adored this couple. Jessica surprised Mitch with a voiceover recording right before she walked down the aisle, and her veil was embroidered with the phrase “Shine Your Light,” a meaningful family saying that carried through the whole day.
When they walked back down the aisle as newlyweds under a shower of flower petals, the joy on both of their faces was completely unfiltered.

After the ceremony we explored the grounds for some wedding couple and wedding party photos before joining the rest of the guests for the cocktail hour.

The reception had that electric, fun energy right from the start. Full dance floor, big laughs, disco balls catching the light. Jessica is a dance teacher, so naturally, there wasn’t just one surprise choreographed dance; there were two! One with her dad and one with Mitch.
My favorite moments of the whole night were the small, unscripted ones in between: guests mid-laugh, the toasts and wild dance floor, and how Jess and Mitch caught each other’s eye across the room. Both of them are so natural with each other, full of inside jokes and stories, and I’m excited for their future together!

If you’re looking for a venue near Raleigh that feels open, light-filled, and a little bit of a hidden gem, The Hartwood is absolutely worth adding to your venue tour list. The open-air chapel with built-in rain cover, the on-site lodging, and the natural landscaping that looks incredible in your photos.
