If you are looking for a wedding venue in the Raleigh or Durham area that feels unique and special, Hill House in Durham could be just right for you. The property is beautiful on its own and does not need much extra decoration. As someone who loves historic homes with beautiful landscapes for weddings, I can’t recommend this wedding venue enough!
We had so much fun creating this spring editorial here, and I really want to show you why this venue is such a dream for your Durham wedding day.
Hill House is a Spanish-inspired historic property in Durham, and it is honestly one of the more interesting and versatile venues I have had the pleasure of working in. The architecture is beautiful, with arches throughout the inside and outside that create natural frames for portraits. Each room has its own character and lighting, which makes it so exciting for your wedding photography.
There are many different spots on the property for your ceremony or reception, so you are not limited to one setup or style. You can make your day feel personal. There is also space for a tented reception if you want a larger event. The venue can host up to 150 guests, but if you have more than 75, you will usually need an outdoor tent, which couples need to arrange separately.

I really loved capturing the couple at the stairwell with the dark wood paneling and that incredible gold-patterned wallpaper. The light coming through the window at the top of the stairs creates these beautiful shadows on the steps, and the contrast of all that richness against a white dress is just stunning.
While the white rooms are equally beautiful, but in a completely different way. All that ornate molding, the arched windows with the greenery visible outside, the marble fireplace. It is timeless and elegant and gives you so many different things to work with depending on the light and the time of day.

In spring, the greenery is lush and beautiful for photos. After winter, seeing the trees fully green again feels exciting, and this editorial captured that feeling. The house is a great backdrop from anywhere on the property, and the mix of Spanish architecture with the natural green is truly unique.
The arches frame everything so naturally, and the light that comes through is soft and directional in a really flattering way.

This editorial was so much fun! The whole vibe was spring energy, and the pops of pink and green throughout made it feel fresh and joyful without being overdone. The serpentine reception table was one of my favorite details. That table style is having a moment right now in the wedding world, and it looked incredible against the Spanish architecture, with all that lush greenery as the backdrop.
We had two wonderful couples who were so fun and easy to create with. With Hannah and Will, I especially loved experimenting with flash photography inside the house. There is something so cinematic about the way flash interacts with those rich, dark interiors, and they just had such a natural ease together that made everything feel effortless.
With Jordan and Chandler, the light-drenched moments at the ceremony space were among my favorites of the whole day. That soft spring light on the lawn with the house behind them and the blush arch framing everything was just dreamy. And their energy together was so warm and real.
We ended the evening with a champagne pop, and I am so glad we did. It went everywhere, and it was chaotic and fun, and such a perfect ending to a beautiful shoot!

If you are drawn to venues with historic character, beautiful natural light, and a setting that does a lot of the heavy lifting on its own, Hill House is absolutely worth adding to your tour list. It is the kind of place that gives couples real creative freedom without feeling overwhelming, and it is genuinely beautiful in every season.
